Special needs education
The Nepalese government names five categories of people with disabilities:
Besides, the number of disabled persons is considerably higher in Nepal than in western countries. Many disabilities originate from missing vaccinations, bad food, lacking hygiene and untreated injuries.
Programmes and services to address the disability are very limited and they have been focused mainly in urban areas. These initiatives are charity based. A study of NEW ERA states that the large part of the people with impediment have no access to educational possibilities, health care, social security (security), support / help and necessary devices or aids, income-creative programs, CBR etc. In spite of the latest efforts from the media and self-help organisations, a large part of the people with disabilities knows nothing about their rights. They still think that a disability or a handicap is a sin of the past and thus more awareness programs have to be held to make the society acknowledge the rights of differently abled people living a respectable life in the society.

Although certain efforts have been made to include and educate disabled people there is still a big lack, esp. in matters of training and teaching methods. Most teacher in care centres for differently abled children or youth don't know much about the individual demands and needs of the children. Therefore teacher trainings are important and necessary.
